As parents, or guardians, it is one of our primary duties to take good care of our children’s wellbeing. However, there are several circumstances that make accomplishing these duties quite a challenge. One of them is our kids’ fear of visiting the dentist. It is a common scenario to see a child not wanting to go to the clinic. Apart from being anxious in meeting strangers, it is hard for a kid to visit an unfamiliar place that is full of metal tools and bright lights. This is why we need to always be with them in every step of the way so we can help ease his or her fears.
Here are simple tips on how you can do so:
It is important that you help create a positive experience for your kid when they visit their dentist for the very first time. It helps make it easier for them to get used to taking good care of their teeth at a young age.
Here are simple tips on how you can do so:
- Choose a Good Dentist – Make sure that before you bring your child to a dentist, you have already found one that is best for him or her. A dentist who specialises in child dentistry is an ideal choice. Choosing your family dentist would also be a great idea.
- Educate – Help your kids understand why they need to visit the dentist and do it in the simplest way that you can. Do not overhype or explain in a complicated manner as it may lead to more questions or confusion and eventually, more fears. Help them learn about the simple benefits they will get and other essential, yet simple, facts.
- Make it “Fun” – You can make the trip a more enjoyable one by keeping calm and loose. You can also create a “simulation” wherein you pretend that you are visiting a doctor while at the same time playing with your kid and having a great time together. This will loosen the tension or keep the pressure off of your little one.
- Start Early – Organise a trip to your dentist as soon as possible and do not wait for your kid to be a little older. The sooner that you get the dental checkup over with, the better for you and your child. Ask your dental care professional when is the earliest that you can bring your kid over to their clinic for a checkup.
- Be Positive – Always let them see the brighter side of the visit as this will help them feel more comfortable. Do not tell stories about how painful it was when you last had your tooth extracted or some similar instances.
